Westchester families will have one less thing to worry about this Thanksgiving thanks to a joint effort between students, Stop & Shop, Shady Brook Farms and Feeding Westchester.
High School Students from The Leffell School, a Jewish Day School, and Maria Regina High School, an all-girls Catholic high school, both located in Hartsdale, teamed up to unload 1,250 Shady Brook Farms turkeys donated by Stop & Shop to Feeding Westchester.
The turkey handoff, dubbed the “Turkey Express,” took place at the White Plains Stop & Shop store on Thursday, Nov. 13.
The students braved a chilly afternoon as they formed a line passing the frozen birds from one vehicle to another.
“It’s so important to come out here because people are struggling and we don’t even know it,” Maria Regina student Summer Ford said. “Some people might not even have a Thanksgiving meal to rely on this year and it’s important to give back what we have every year to other people who don’t have.”
On hand to help was Feeding Westchester Chief Operations Officer Tami Wilson, who noted that the true meaning behind the Thanksgiving holiday, “love, family and gratitude,” was why the group was there to donate the turkeys.
“It has been rough this November and we’re just so happy to have donated turkeys, with of course the help of Shady Brook Farms and Stop & Shop,” Wilson said. “These turkeys are going to go out to the people in the community who meet the need.”
