Saugerties store shut down for marketing cannabis to underage customers

A store in Saugerties allegedly selling unlicensed cannabis products and marketing them to underage customers has been closed, the state Office of Cannabis Management announced.

OCM identified the store as Saugerties Convenience, located at 72 Partition St. in Saugerties.

The business held its grand opening last week. OCM investigators arrived on Nov. 24, seized the illegal product and closed the store.

The agency said it discovered the store was selling and marketing its products to people under the age of 21 after receiving reports from concerned community members.

“In addition to supporting the licensed operators who do things the right way, one of the top priorities of our enforcement work is keeping cannabis out of kids’ hands,” said Daniel Haughney, director of enforcement and investigations at OCM.

“Selling cannabis to young people is despicable, irresponsible and the truest meaning of careless,” added Felicia A.B. Reid, acting executive director of OCM. “To the smoke shops selling illicit cannabis and flagrantly violating the laws that protect the health of our youngest New Yorkers, take notice: there will be certain and swift consequences.”

Residents may report suspected illegal cannabis activity at cannabis.ny.gov.
