Marcarlo Mannello becomes youngest Div. I NY state wrestling champ

ALBANY – Westlake Middle School eighth-grader Marcarlo Mannello has a confidence about him you wouldn’t necessarily expect while talking to someone who turned 13 in October.

It’s not a cockiness, but Mannello is someone at a young age who understands the amount of work it takes to become an elite wrestler. And he made history Feb. 28 at MVP Arena. At 13 years old, he is the youngest Div. I state champion in history.

Mannello passed P.J. Duke, who won the first of his four state titles as a seventh grader in 2020. When Duke won on Feb, 29, 2020, he was 13 years, 7 months, 22 days. Mannello is 13 years, 4 months, 10 days.

The top-seeded Mannello won the New York State title for Div. I large schools, defeating Division’s Ayden Delgado, the third seed, at 103 pounds in a 7-2 decision. Mannello had takedowns in the first and second period to give himself a lead and he wrestled strong defensively throughout the bout.

“I was really happy,” Mannello said. “But I was also trying to reflect on how the match maybe could have been a little bit easier for me. A state final is not supposed to be easy, but if you get up to a certain level, a lot of matches become easy that are supposed to be hard.”

Mannello ends his season at 40-0 and did not surrender a takedown this season.

Junior Nick DeBellis of Horace Greeley fell in the 150-pound Div. I championship match to Pittsford’s Samson McKissick-Staley in a 14-4 major decision. George Johnson of Iona Prep lost to Bellport’s Camryn Howard for the 157-pound title in a 21-6 technical fall.

No room for mistakes for Mannello

Mannello said he’s noticed while attending the state tournament in the past that small mistakes could change your fate in a blink of an eye.

“Just knowing that one little mistake could end it all,” Mannello said. “You could be up 14-0 and you make one mistake and it’s all for nothing. All the work you put in, all the time and effort. If you really wanted to be on top, that means you were dreaming about it – the moment that you’re so focused on. The fact that it could slip away is hard.”

But Mannello held on to his moment and made his community and his coach, Joe Grippi, happy.

“It’s just really an accumulation of hard work, from him and then his parents, and his brother, and everyone who works with him at his club,” said Grippi, who coaches the combined Briarcliff/Byram Hills/Valhalla/Westlake team.

Grippi, who graduated from Fox Lane in 2009, lost in a state final in his career and never could have imagined he’d trade in his wrestling shoes and singlet for a shirt and tie, and win a state championship that way.

“I’ve experienced a lot of losing in the finals,” said Grippi, whose brother Matt also lost three times in a state final. “To be on the winning end, it really feels amazing.”

Marcarlo’s older brother, Vincenzo Mannello, a three-time Section 1 champion and a perennial state title contender, lost a tough quarterfinal at 118 pounds to Manhasset’s Will Russell by pinfall on Feb. 27. But with Vincenzo a freshman and Marcarlo not even in high school yet, the wrestling community can expect to see plenty more of both brothers. He wrestled back to place fourth

The Mannellos’ father Mick was proud of both of his sons.

“The entire family is all in,” Mick Mannello said. “From meals to training to tournaments. We’re all fully invested, so it’s great to see their success with all the hard work they put in and everything we put into this.”

Nick DeBellis falls in state final match to McKissick-Staley

Horace Greeley junior Nick DeBellis has made a lot of gains in the last year. In 2025, he went 1-2 in the Section 1 tournament.

In 2026, he lost in a state championship bout to Pittsford’s Samson McKissick Staley. McKissick-Staley won in a 14-4 major decision.

“Last year, I did work really hard and I was good. I didn’t really believe in myself,” said DeBellis, whose dad Mike is a longtime coach, currently an assistant at Greeley. “I didn’t really think I was a man. That switch in my head when I started getting older, I’m like ‘I can’t let people bully me. I’m a grown man.

McKissick-Staley had four takedowns in the bout – one in the first, two in the second and one in the third.

DeBellis mentioned that he and Greeley teammate Chris Nocca, who placed fourth at 157, constantly pushed each other.

“Me and Nocca push each other very hard in the room” DeBellis said. “We’ve had days where we kill each other – got into fistfights this year. We go hard. It’s great having a guy like that because I know nobody in the state has a guy that good to go drill with. Probably the best technique in the state.”

“It’s kind of hard to not get close when you’re working your butts off every day,” Nocca said.

George Johnson falls to Howard at 157, proud of season

Iona Prep’s George Johnson and Bellport’s Camryn Howard, who he lost to for the 157-pound state title, trained together this year at KD Training until they realized they’d be competing at the same weight class on the big stage of the state tournament.

Despite losing in a 21-6 technical fall to his friend Howard, Johnson was positive about a season where he placed second in the state and had a 45-2 record.

“I’m not looking at it as a bad loss,” Johnson said. “I wrestled, I competed and I had a few scoring opportunities.”

Johnson said in years past, he was too focused on results.

“Winning this helps me get to college or whatnot, but if I decide to peak in high school and like, the fire extinguishes right after I win states, then I’m not going to keep going. My plan is keep going.”

State placements and milestones from the Lower Hudson Valley

Nyack’s Devin Bierfeldt placed third at 190 and John Jay-East Fishkill’s Michael Mauro placed third at 285, both in Division I. Placing fourth were Vincenzo Mannello (118), Iona Prep’s Shane Degl (138), Horace Greeley’s Nocca (157), Fox Lane’s Luke Ryan (165) and Sleepy Hollow’s Miles Sheridan (Div. II 165)

Placing fifth were Tappan Zee’s Justin Reiss (144) and Yorktown’s Rocco Lore (215). Finishing sixth were Somers’ Ryan Ball (138), Clarkstown North’s Will Roden (175) and Tappan Zee’s Binak Bruncaj (285).

Placing seventh were North Rockland’s Liam Lin (118) and Yorktown’s Tyler Caricati (175). Placing eighth were Nanuet’s John Parisi (Div. II 138) and Pawling’s Hudson Garbarino (Div. II 215).

Bierfeldt won his 100th match in the Round of 16 on Friday. Ball won his 200th match in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

New York State tournament wrestling notes before finals

At 103 pounds, Westlake eighth-grader Marcarlo Mannello is on a 43-match winning streak. His last loss was to North Babylon’s Xavier Seabury in the consolation semifinals in 2025. Division freshman Ayden Delgado is 34-2.

At 150 pounds, Greeley junior Nick Debellis lost two matches all season – both were to Gene Edwards of Central Valley Academy, who finished fourth in Div. II 150. Senior Samson McKissick Staley of Pittsford is a two-time state runner up who is going to Cornell next season.

At 157, Iona Prep senior George Johnson is 45-1, his only loss coming early this season at 165 was to Danny Dacey of Saratoga Springs, who is in the state title bout. His opponent, Bellport sophomore Camryn Howard, trains with him at KD Training Center. Howard is 50-0 this season and won the state title at 138. Howard has not lost a bout since Dec. 22, 2024, where he lost to private and prep school wrestlers at Beast of the East.
