The New York Giants (2-10) will visit the New England Patriots (10-2) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Monday Night Football in a Week 13 battle.
That, of course, provides those of us here at Giants Wire the opportunity to hypothetically steal from the Patriots’ roster in search of depth and/or talent upgrades for Big Blue.
The Patriots have an abundance of talent and are well-coached under Mike Vrabel. They are especially stacked at the top-end of their roster, with superstar talent on both sides of the ball, including in areas that plague the Giants.
With so many players to pick from, Giants Wire struggled to whittle things down. Consideration was given to quarterback Drake Maye, wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Demario Douglas, tight end Hunter Henry, running back TreVeyon Henderson, safety Jaylinn Hawkins, cornerback Marcus Jones, defensive lineman Cory Durden, and several others.
Ultimately, we chose a boring option at a position in which the Giants could use a significant upgrade: Guard Mike Onwenu.
The Giants have seen marked improvement from their offensive line this season, but they still struggle on the interior. Both Greg Van Roten and Jon Runyan Jr. are playing at a below-average level, particularly when run blocking, and Onwenu would offer a significant upgrade.
A sixth-round pick in 2020 who was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team, Onwenu has started all but two games since 2022 and posted elite grades (Pro Football Focus) early in his career. After a down season in 2024, he has returned to form under Vrabel and is again considered one of the top guards league-wide.
Just 27 years old, there is plenty of tread left on Onwenu’s tires, and his presence would serve as a significant boost in both the run and pass game — enough that he won out over several other players who would also make good steals for the Giants.
