Chance of snow in the Mohawk Valley this Thanksgiving

There’s a chance for up to six inches of snow this Thanksgiving and the National Weather Service in Binghamton is urging holiday travelers to watch the weather reports.

A winter storm watch has been issued for Oneida and Madison County, starting in the afternoon on Nov. 27 until the morning of Nov. 29.

Heavy lake effect snow is possible on Thanksgiving, with total snow accumulations greater than six inches possible and winds that can reach 40 mph.

Meteorologist Kaitlyn Lardeo said conditions are most likely to start later on Thanksgiving, after dinner, and pick up Friday.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty on the amounts of snow, since it’s still days away, but the big message the National Weather Service is pushing is to keep watching the forecast and looking for updates,” Lardeo said.

Anyone who has to drive during the potential winter storm is encouraged to drive safely and stay on top of the forecasts.

“Just like any other winter weather condition, keep an eye on the forecast,” Lardeo said. “Everybody’s commute and travel time is different, but staying on top of the forecast is what we recommend right now, just because there’s so much uncertainty.”
