A 74-year-old Brewster man died after the car he was driving struck a pickup truck on Thursday morning, Dec. 11, in Putnam County.
Vito Planamento drove east on Route 301 near Smokey Hollow Court when his car rounded a curve and struck the pickup truck that had a trailer carrying an excavator at about 9:15 a.m., a Carmel police news release said.
Planamento was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, the police said.
The crash caused a collision that involved two other vehicles, the police said, and one of the other drivers had minor injuries.
Route 301 was closed from Gipsy Trail Road to Dixon Road for several hours.
The investigation is ongoing. The police said unsafe speed appears to have been a contributing factor.
Carmel police were helped at the scene by Kent police, the Putnam County Sheriff’s office, Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services, the state police, Putnam County Fire Police, Carmel EMS, and Carmel Fire Department, among others.
