Rochester police have confirmed that a body was discovered in the rubble of fire that heavily damaged a vacant city church earlier this week.
Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department on Thursday, Dec. 11 confirmed that a body was discovered in rubble by a demolition crew working to clear debris from the scene of the church on Forbes Street.
Police are investigating – to both determine the cause of death and how the body came to be buried in the rubble. Officers did not release the name of the person whose body was found in the debris or any details about the death.
The fire was reported around 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at the vacant Trinity Inter-Faith Church on Forbes Street, just west of Gardiner Avenue in southwest Rochester. The three-alarm fire heavily damaged the building, according to the Rochester Fire Department.
Fire officials on Sunday said the church was not occupied and that no injuries were reported.
Parts of the building were demolished earlier this week as a result of the fire.
