The New York Jets want to build a physical football team in the trenches. That’s the preferred approach new head coach Aaron Glenn wants to take. Coach Glenn enjoyed firsthand success in Detroit alongside Dan Campbell with the Lions by having tough, productive fronts on both offense and defense.
Rebuilding the Jets remains a work in progress. ESPN Analytics does a phenomenal job compiling pass rush, run stop, and blocking win rates. With that said, let’s analyze where the Jets rank in each category after Week 2.
Pass-Rush-Win Rate: 25th
The Jets currently place 25th in pass-rush-win-rate (PRWR) through two weeks with a success rate of 32%. The defense has generated five sacks through two contests, with Will McDonald IV posting a team-leading 2.0 QB takedowns. There’s room for improvement.
Run-Stop-Win-Rate: 19th
James Cook torched the Jets for 132 yards and two touchdowns, but the Steelers’ running backs combined for 56 yards via 18 carries in Week 1. Coach Glenn wants to see his run defense bounce back against Bucky Irving and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3.
Pass-Block-Win Rate: 16th
Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor were sacked twice apiece against the Bills. Fields was sacked just once versus the Steelers. The dual-threat quarterback can be difficult to protect, so the offensive line has done a stellar job in this department thus far.
Run-Block-Win-Rate: 7th
The Jets rushed for 182 yards and three touchdowns in a 32-point showing versus the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. That number dropped to 100 total rushing yards against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. The results have been inconsistent, but the Jets will continue fielding a run-heavy offense so long as they’re blocking this efficiently.
