Iowa women's basketball takeaways from win over Western Illinois

IOWA CITY — The worry of sluggish play around a holiday is usually a Christmas concern for college basketball coaches.

However, given how the Iowa women’s basketball schedule lined up, a rare home game before Thanksgiving made for a similar challenge.

The No. 14 Hawkeyes conquered it, largely uneventfully, with their 86-69 home win over Western Illinois on Nov. 26. Iowa constructed a double-digit lead toward the end of the first quarter and its cushion rarely dipped below 15 in the second half.

With that, here are three takeaways from the Hawkeyes’ performance.

Iowa didn’t let the looming Thanksgiving holiday get in the way

There were some sluggish moments, largely a result of 21 Iowa turnovers, but nothing significantly concerning. The biggest flashpoint came early in the first half when Iowa coach Jan Jensen called a timeout shortly after a media timeout to lay into her team for not bringing the energy. The Hawkeyes immediately responded with a 10-0 surge.

“Western Illinois is a hard team for a team like ours to guard,” Jensen said. “We should’ve played better, but I’m going to credit (Western Illinois coach) J.D. (Gravina). They had a good game plan. They’re all guards. So (center) Layla (Hays) has to come way out of her comfort zone. Ava (Heiden) has got to come out of her comfort zone.

“… It’s a weird game. Yes, we could’ve executed a lot better. We blew some defensive assignments. But that type of team is not the easiest for our centers to guard. So that is that.”

If it seems weird for Iowa to be at home this close to Turkey Day, it’s actually pretty rare. With its November MTE (multi-team event) already completed, this is the first time since 2006 that Iowa’s original schedule has had the Hawkeyes at home the week of Thanksgiving.

Iowa was at home this holiday week in 2020 and 2021 —but unexpectedly. The former was because of the truncated COVID schedule that didn’t start until the week of Thanksgiving. The latter was because a positive COVID test axed Iowa’s MTE appearance that season.

The Western Illinois win being in the rearview mirror will make this Thanksgiving an enjoyable one for all involved with the Hawkeyes.

This was easily Addie Deal’s best collegiate game yet

The smooth treys, the clean jumpers after weaving through traffic — all of it was on display as Addie Deal racked up a game-high 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep. She added five assists and three rebounds while playing a team-high 31 minutes.

“Just staying the course, believing in my teammates,” Deal said. “I thought we did really good at the start of the game. We came out with energy, and we always play better when we have energy.”

As with many freshmen, even highly rated ones across the country, confidence is usually the key to unlocking everything. In a roundabout way, it helped Deal that Iowa was playing short-handed and needed her to go longer than usual.

“The last week, I think she was just able to step back and let herself develop a little more and improve and just go for it,” Jensen said. “She’s coming in, and everyone has expectations. But if you watch the film and see where we needed some growth and get a little bit more comfortable, she just dropped her shoulders a little bit and stayed with it.”

The Hawkeyes are learning how to survive while short-handed

While it wasn’t surprising to see Chit-Chat Wright (upper body) ruled out on the pregame availability report after her WBCA Showcase injury, the fact that she was joined by two teammates was.

By the time Iowa and Western Illinois tipped off, the Hawkeyes had just 11 active players, with Teagan Mallegni and Emely Rodriguez also sidelined. Mallegni was ruled out pregame, while Rodriguez was listed as questionable but never participated in shootaround.

Jensen said postgame that Wright and Rodriguez remain day-to-day, and that Mallegni will need about a week before returning.

Hawkeye Radio’s Rob Brooks said during the pregame show that Mallegni had her tonsils removed on Monday, and that Rodriguez is battling a back issue.

“It’s definitely hard when you have a few people go down,” said senior Taylor McCabe, who delivered 15 points on 5-for-10 from deep. “Definitely missing some people right now. We’ve gotten a lot of reps in practice, for sure. This is definitely good for our growth and depth as a team.”

Everyone seemed to bump up a notch in the rotation as a result. Deal’s minutes set a season-high mark. Callie Levin’s second-quarter appearance led to double-digit minutes for the first time in her career. The Solon product held her own with six points and three rebounds.

While there’s never a good time to endure any stretch of injuries, having them happen this time of year at least gives Iowa a chance to survive without a ton of game disruption. Beginning with Thanksgiving, the Hawkeyes have just one game over the next nine days before their Big Ten opener at Rutgers on Dec. 6.
