Iowa women's basketball guard Chit-Chat Wright still 'day-to-day'

Iowa women’s basketball (6-0) just completed its trip to Orlando, Fla., where the Hawkeyes topped then-No. 10 Baylor and Miami.

Early in the third quarter of Iowa’s win over Baylor last Thursday, sophomore guard Chit-Chat Wright exited after taking a hard fall. Before the Hawkeyes took on Miami on Saturday night, an Iowa spokesperson confirmed that Wright had suffered an upper-body injury against the Bears.

On Monday, Iowa head women’s basketball coach Jan Jensen commented on Wright’s status, telling reporters that the 5-foot-4 guard remains “day-to-day” and was not expected to practice on Monday.

Wright is averaging 12.6 points, 4.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game on 58.3% field goal shooting, 60% 3-point shooting and 90% accuracy from the free-throw line.

Jensen was pleased with the way her team responded to Wright’s injury in the second half against Baylor and all of its date versus Miami.

“Chat has really turned into a leader for us. She’s quiet, but she’s growing into the way her presence is on the floor and they really rely on her for a bucket, they rely on her to be able to break a press, they rely on her to get them the pass when they need it. And she can defend.

“So I think that this team being able to—a lot of people had to be out of their comfort zones in this game—McCabe doesn’t usually handle the ball coming up as much, Addie’s getting more used to getting more minutes and handling that, Stremlow had to run it. Kylie, she’s been there, but still, we’d like it to be Chit-Chat coming up, but I think that that was the best part is that we were on the positive side of it. I’m hopeful that when we get Chit-Chat back, we can look a little bit more fluid, morphing into it. Most everybody that’s playing this year is in a whole different role, and so learning that offense, it’s going to take a little bit of time,” Jensen said.

Iowa returns to action on Wednesday night against Western Illinois (4-0) in a game that will tipoff at 6:30 p.m. CT and stream on B1G+.
