It is not common to witness a player making record-breaking history, but last weekend, a sold-out Kinnick Stadium on Senior Day was able to witness just that when Iowa Hawkeyes star return man Kaden Wetjen etched his name in the record books.
Wetjen took a punt return for a touchdown against Michigan State, passing the great Tim Dwight for the most return touchdowns in Iowa history. The return proved vital, as Iowa snuck out with a win, and came in a game where the Hawkeyes needed every point possible.
The return and breaking the record have been noticed. Kaden Wetjen has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.
This year, Kaden Wetjen has electrified fans whenever the ball has touched his hands. He has 12 kickoff returns, averaging 29.7 yards per return with a touchdown. He has returned 18 punts this year, averaging 28.3 yards per return with three touchdowns. Wetjen has six total return touchdowns during his time at Iowa.
His time at Iowa came after taking the road less traveled. Standing just 5-foot-9, Wetjen was overlooked out of high school and spent a season at Iowa Western Community College, where he was a star. His performance there got the attention of the Hawkeyes, and the rest is history.
