Iowa football standout named as Outland Trophy semifinalist

After being named the Outland Trophy Player of the Week on the weekend of Oct. 25, Iowa football’s (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) graduate senior captain and foundational center Logan Jones has been named one of seven semifinalists for the 2025 Outland Trophy, according to the Greater Omaha Sports Committee’s announcement on Nov. 19.

The Outland Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s best interior lineman on offense or defense, which Iowa has won four prior times (Brandon Scherff, 2014; Robert Gallery, 2003; Alex Karras, 1957; and Calvin Jones, 1955), had two previous finalists (Daviyon Nixon, 2020; and Tyler Linderbaum, 2021), and two semifinalists (Tristan Wirfs, 2019; and Mike Devlin, 1992).

The 6-foot-3, 302-pound native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, has started 48 career games and is the top-rated center in the country by Pro Football Focus, and anchors a Hawkeyes’ offensive line that is also a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award.

Jones’ protection, along with the rest of the Hawkeyes’ offensive line, has helped quarterback Mark Gronowski utilize his mobility by allowing him to rush for a touchdown in all 10 games, which is a new Big Ten single-season record for the most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown by a quarterback. Gronowski’s 13 rushing scores this season are also the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in Iowa program history.

The six other semifinalists for the award include Utah’s junior offensive tackle Spencer Fano, Oregon’s junior offensive lineman Iapani Laloulu, Ohio State’s junior defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, Indiana’s redshirt-junior offensive tackle Carter Smith, Navy’s senior defensive tackle Landon Robinson, and Alabama’s junior offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor.

The semifinalists will be pared to three finalists on Nov. 25, with the recipient of the 2025 Outland Trophy announced on Dec. 12.

Jones and the Hawkeyes will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 22, from a sold-out Kinnick Stadium ahead of their contest against the Michigan State Spartans (3-7, 0-7 Big Ten), which will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT and will be televised on FS1.
