Drivers trying to navigate Des Moines’ interstates in the evening and overnight hours will need to be prepared for delays and detours. Multiple construction projects will result in closed roads and interchanges in the coming days.
The closures are part of work on both mixmasters in the metro, which connect Interstates 35, 80 and 235.
The Iowa DOT asks motorists to exercise caution in construction areas, to obey the speed limit, which is often reduced, and to obey other signs.
When will the Iowa DOT close eastbound Interstate 80?
The Iowa DOT will close eastbound Interstate 80 for several days between Waukee and West Des Moines.
The interstate will be closed between Grand Prairie Parkway (exit 118) and the southwest mixmaster from 8:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning on these days:
Crews will be doing concrete work and ramp widening during this time.
What is the detour when eastbound I-80 is closed?
Due to other construction work in the area, different detours will be required depending on a driver’s final destination.
Drivers wanting to reach southbound I-35 or I-235 will need to exit at Grand Prairie Parkway, travel north and then east on University Avenue. Drivers can connect to southbound I-35 at University Avenue and reach the mixmaster to get to I-235. Drivers cannot reach northbound I-35/eastbound I-80 from University Avenue.
To reach northbound I-35/eastbound I-80, drivers will need to continue east on University Avenue to Valley West Drive/100th Street and take that north to Hickman Road/U.S. Highway 6. From there, drivers can connect to I-80/35.
Hickman Road will also be closed for construction work near the interchange from 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, through 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.
When will the Iowa DOT close parts of the northeast mixmaster?
Several portions of the northeast mixmaster will be closed to complete overhead signage work.
The Iowa DOT will close the ramp from eastbound I-235 from 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 until 5 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.
Crews will also close westbound I-80 at the mixmaster from 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 until 4 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.
During this time, the entrance ramp from southbound U.S. Highway 69/Northeast 14th Street to eastbound I-80 will be closed.
What is the detour when portions of the northeast mixmaster is closed?
Drivers on I-235 trying to reach westbound I-80 will need to continue north through the mixmaster and then exit at Corporate Woods Drive. They can then return to southbound I-35 and use the mixmaster to reach westbound I-80.
All westbound drivers on I-80 approaching the mixmaster will need to exit and head north on I-35. Those needing to reach I-235 or continue on I-80 should exit at Corporate Woods Drive and then head south on I-35 to use the open portions of the mixmaster to reach either interstate.
