Former Iowa baseball pitcher Adam Mazur recalled by Miami Marlins, will start vs. Phillies

After being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville by the Miami Marlins (29-42), former Iowa baseball right-handed pitcher Adam Mazur will start on the mound tonight vs. the Philadelphia Phillies (43-30) from loadDepot Park in Miami, Fla.

The former Hawkeye made his MLB Debut last season with the San Diego Padres, who selected the 6-foot-2, St. Paul, Minn., native with their second-round pick (No. 53 overall) in the 2022 MLB Draft. In his eight starts with the Padres, he posted a 7.49 ERA over 33.2 innings, including 22 strikeouts.

At the end of July, the Padres traded Mazur, along with second baseman Jay Beshears, left-hander Robby Snelling, and third baseman Graham Pauley to Miami in exchange for left-hander Tanner Scott and right-hander Bryan Hoeing. Mazur would finish out the remainder of the 2024-25 season with Triple-A Jacksonville.

“Very cool. Just excited for this opportunity,” Mazur told reporters. “I’m open to whatever. Not sure what to expect, but I’m just excited to be here.”

So far this season with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Mazur made 12 starts, posting a 3.62 ERA over 59.2 innings, including 55 strikeouts to 16 walks.

According to MLB Pipeline, Mazur is the Marlins’ No. 12 overall prospect and defines his best pitch as his tight upper-80s slider/cutter.

“Just going to go out there and compete and give these guys a chance to win. That’s the name of the game up here. Go out there, compete, and give them a chance to win every single time you take the mound.”

During his lone season with Iowa in the 2021-22 campaign, Mazur finished with a 7-3 record with a 3.07 ERA, to go along with 98 strikeouts to 30 base-on-balls through 93 2/3 innings in 15 total appearances. Mazur also earned the 2022 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year award and was named to the first-team All-Big Ten roster.

With former Hawkeyes Jack Dreyer and Adam Mazur both on MLB 40-man rosters, it’s the first time under head coach Rick Heller that Iowa has had multiple players in the majors at the same time.

While the Marlins are currently in a fifth-place tie with the Washington Nationals at a distant 15 games back of the NL East-leading New York Mets, the Marlins have been on a decent trend by winning 6 of their last 10 games. As the team tests out their up-and-coming talent, Mazur should be able to stick around in the rotation, barring any setback.

Tonight’s Marlins vs. Phillies matchup will begin at 5:40 p.m. CT, with Philadelphia scheduled to start left-hander Ranger Suarez (5-1, 2.32 ERA) in opposition to Mazur.
