Will Daniel Jones play Sunday? Colts QB has fractured fibula per report

Colts quarterback Daniel Jones is playing through a fractured fibula in his left leg, the NFL Network reported on Thursday.

Both the Colts and Jones’ representation declined to comment on the nature of the quarterback’s injury to IndyStar on Thursday.

When the injury was first revealed as a fibula injury last week, Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen was asked if it was fractured, and he deflected the question, saying he would not get into the specifics of the injury.

Jones, who started last week’s loss to Kansas City and played all 51 offensive snaps, has not revealed the specific nature of the injury, either.

The Indianapolis starter first felt something in his leg last Thursday, earning him a limited designation on the injury report.

Jones was listed as limited again on Wednesday, an estimated injury report because the Colts went through a walk-through instead of a conventional practice. A league source told IndyStar that Jones was a full participant in Thursday’s session and looked good, although it looked like he was moving gingerly.

Under NFL rules, a player is listed as a full participant if he takes his normal repetitions during practice. Media only observe the portion of practice that includes stretching and individual drills.

Both Jones and Steichen have downplayed the impact of the Jones injury on his ability to play.

“There are no limitations with him right now,” Steichen said on Monday.

Indianapolis does not expect Jones to be limited the rest of the week.

“I’m all good,” Jones said Wednesday. “I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”

Who is the Colts backup quarterback?

Riley Leonard, a rookie sixth-round pick out of Notre Dame, is the Colts’ backup quarterback.

Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft remains out due to a broken orbital bone. “He’s resting his eye and making sure that’s getting fully healthy,” Steichen said last week. The Colts head coach said Richardson couldn’t return to active football-centric workouts until the injury itself was fully healed.

The Colts have Brett Rypien on the practice squad and could activate him if they have concerns over Jones’ ability to play Sunday.
