Why Colts aren't sharing any more info on QB Daniel Jones' leg injury

The Colts do not plan to shed any further light on the nature of the fibula injury Daniel Jones is battling right now.

Jones initially felt discomfort on Thursday, earned a limited designation in practice on Thursday and practiced in full before playing all 51 offensive snaps in a 23-20 loss to Kansas City on Sunday.

The quarterback ran three times for 16 yards, but Jones was not quite as aggressive as he’d been on scrambles before the bye, opting to coast out of bounds on one first-down run and sliding on another.

Jones may have simply been making the safe decision.

“All I’ve got for you is he’s got a fibula, and that’s it,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said.

Jones deflected a question about his injury after Sunday’s game, his first interview after being listed on the injury report. The Colts quarterback typically meets with the media on Wednesdays.

“I’m good enough to play,” Jones said in Kansas City. “I felt good out there.”

Steichen echoed his quarterback’s thoughts on Monday.

The Colts head coach typically does not get into detail on injuries unless a player is out for the rest of the season.

The Jones injury is no different.

“I’m not going to get into specifics, but he’s out there, he’s playing, he’s practicing,” Steichen said. “He’s good to go.”

From a play-calling standpoint, Steichen said the Jones injury does not affect his decision-making, but it would have been unlikely anyway. The Colts have not asked Jones to carry the ball on designed quarterback runs sparingly this season — Jones has 43 carries, but fewer than 10 have been designed runs, most coming on sneaks — and he was able to carry out a handful of bootlegs against the Chiefs.

“There’s no limitations with him right now,” Steichen said. “We go through our weekly game-plan process, and we go from there.”
