It was unfortunate news prior to this weekends game that Notre Dame starting safety Tae Johnson would miss the game against Syracuse, and while it didn’t mater, we all waited to find out what the long term prognosis is.
Irish head coach Marcus Freeman was asked about his redshirt freshman star, and he let everyone know that Johnson most likely will be out next weekend against Stanford. He broke his hand punching out a ball in practice, but could return against the Cardinal if needed as reported by The Athletic’s Pete Sampson.
Looking quickly ahead to next weekend’s very late start, it just doesn’t make sense for Notre Dame to push him into action. Johnson is better off resting up, and preparing for a potential first-round College Football Playoff opponent. The way that his season has played out, it looks like the Irish will be starting the quest on the road, and will need all the help it can get.
