After the College Football Playoff committee released its third set of rankings on Tuesday, many went to social media to rant about Notre Dame being above Miami as they have the same 8-2 record but the Hurricanes beat the Irish during each teams season opener.
The two teams would start off the season going in different directions, Notre Dame losing its next game to Texas A&M and Miami reeling off five-straight wins. The Hurricanes would then lose two of the next three weeks, both games to unranked opponents.
After having some time to think about what had happened, Colin Cowherd came to the conclusion that it’s not just looking at head-to-head matchups, its about timing, and what have you done for me lately. The Irish have a much better recent resume, as they’ve improved over the course of the season, while Miami is one again stumbling to the finish line.
The Hurricanes did the same thing last year, jumping out to an impressive record and ranking only to falter at the end of the regular season and miss the playoff. It hard to argue the committee viewing Notre Dame as the stronger program as well, as they were in a similar position last fall and made it to the title game. Nice to see a national talking head have it on straight.
