Unloaded firearm found in student's locker at Tremont Middle School

TREMONT — An unloaded firearm was found in a student’s locker at Tremont Middle School on Monday, according to a release from the village’s police department.

School officials notified the Tremont Police Department on Monday that an unloaded firearm had been discovered in the backpack of a juvenile student. The backpack was stored in the student’s locker.

The student had already been isolated from the general student population prior to the discovery, according to police. School administrators immediately secured the firearm and turned it over to the school resource officer.

“Bringing weapons onto school grounds is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Tremont police wrote in a Facebook post. “Tremont School staff and Tremont Police will continue working diligently to maintain the highest level of safety across all three schools.”

Tremont police said all students and staff are safe, and there is no indication of any threat to individuals or the school. The investigation is still ongoing.

Tremont is a village of about 2,300 people, located 15 miles southeast of Peoria.
