Summerfest and antique car show among 6 things to do this weekend in Kewanee area

The weekend brings Summerfest and the 30th Annual Bishop Hill Antique Car Show, along with fundraisers, live music and more to the Kewanee area.

What: This event for all ages features a waterslide and inflatable obstacle course, games for all ages, free hot dogs and popcorn, pet-friendly horses, treats from the KONA Ice Truck, music and bubbles. A ribbon cutting for the Pollinator Garden will be at 4 p.m. Celebrate the garden planted in May by the Rotary Club of Geneseo.

When: 3-6 p.m. Friday, July 25

Where: Allure of Geneseo, 704 S. Illinois St., Geneseo

Pork Chop Dinner

What: The annual pork chop dinner is hosted by First Presbyterian Church. Carryout is available. The menu includes pork chop sandwiches, hot dogs, potato salad, applesauce, baked beans, beverage and dessert.

When: 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday, July 26

Where: First Presbyterian Church, 2431 First St., Coal Valley

Cost: $10; $5 for ages 5-12; free for children age 4 and younger

Night Sky Viewing

What: Come after sunset for a family-friendly tour of the summer night sky in the parking lot. The full moon will dominate the night sky. Mercury and possibly Venus may be visible shortly after sunset for a brief time. Also, look for the Garnet Star, M4 and many other objects, weather permitting. Knowledgeable club members will have telescopes including the PACMO (mobile observatory) set up. If you have a telescope, bring it along. Keep in mind, restroom facilities will not be available. Re-scheduled from July 19 because of weather.

When: 8:30-11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26

Where: Niabi Zoo, 12525 Niabi Road, Coal Valley

Cost: Free

GAC Kids Art Day

What: Create Rocko the Snake. Pre-registration is not required. The project is for children age 6 to 9 years old.

When: 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 26

Where: Wiley Park, 301 N.W. Fourth Ave., Galva

Cost: $5

Bishop Hill Antique Car Show

What: The 30th annual Bishop Hill Antique Car Show will be held rain or shine. Register between 8 and 11:30 a.m. Judging is from noon to 1:30 p.m., with trophies presented at 3 p.m.

When: 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27

Where: Bishop Hill

Cost: $15 entry fee

Galva Music Series

What: Dick “Dickie” Prall, who performs at 6 p.m., is a master of what a recent interviewer called “self-deprecating indie rock.”  His newest release, the Headful of Hiss EP, is a testament to his ever-strengthening gifts as a songwriter. At 7 p.m., Pat Byrne takes the stage. An Irish singer-songwriter, Pat Byrne has come a long way since his first deal with Universal. In late 2017, Byrne began his migration to Austin, Texas. Being immersed in the Texas music scene, Pat’s sophomore U.S. release, “Into the Light,” has an edgier feel. Bring lawn chairs/blankets. Food and non-food vendors will be on-site.

Shark Bites & Movie Nights

What: Dive into Shark Week with an afternoon of fun, facts and fins. Enjoy a repeat screening of the classic thriller Jaws (PG-13) along with shark-themed activities before and during the movie. The event includes shark trivia challenge to win prizes, shark-themed snacks and a shark-themed craft. It is for teens and adults who love Shark Week, movies, and hanging out in a fun, ocean-themed atmosphere.

When: 10:30 a.m. – noon Tuesday, July 29

Where: Kewanee Public Library District, 102 S. Tremont St., Kewanee

Wednesday Night Concert Series

What: Experience “gear slamming rock and roll” with the band, 3 on the Tree.

When: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30

Where: Central Bank Pavilion, 208 N. State St., Geneseo

Mean Mary

What: Mary James, youngest of six children, was born in Alabama, though her family lived in Florida, just south of the Alabama line. Her mom and dad lived a nomadic lifestyle. Once, they packed up the family and moved from Florida to North Minnesota, near the Canadian border, to rough it in the wild. Today, Mary James produces music and videos, tours across the U.S. and overseas and is an endorsing artist for Deering Banjos. The 6 p.m. potluck/social hour is optional. Plates, bowls, silverware, napkins and serving spoons are provided. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and your own beverage. The rain location is Bishop Hill Creative Commons. This is an all ages, family-friendly show.

When: 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31

Where: Ca d’Zan House Concerts, 197 CR-16, Cambridge

Cost: $20-30 suggested donation

Summer Concert Series

What: The Kewanee Chamber summer concert series continues with KHS Marching Boilermakers performing July 31. The food stand opens at 5 p.m., with the concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.

When: 5 p.m. Thursday, July 31

Where: Veterans Park, 313 N. Burr St., Kewanee

Cost: Free admission
