Ready for cooler weather? See where temps, heat index are higher than Florida

While summer heat has been sticking — literally — around Florida for weeks, for millions across the United States, the arrival of a record-breaking heat wave this week is going to be tough.

More than 170 million Americans are under heat advisories, extreme heat warnings or extreme heat watches, according to the National Weather Service.

The reason for the potentially record-breaking heat is a “heat dome,” an area of high pressure with warm air trapped beneath it, NOAA said.

“Extremely dangerous heat persists from Midwest to the East Coast this week,” forecasters said.

“This level of heat risk is known for being rare and/or long duration with little to no overnight relief, and affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration,” the National Weather Service said.

“High temperatures in the 90s to 100s and lows in the 70s to low 80s will break numerous records over the next several days. Dense urban centers like: Columbus, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; will experience especially significant heat impacts.”

The heat index could hit 113 June 23 in Bedminister, New Jersey, home of President Trump’s private club, well above what’s expected for most of Florida.

Florida temperatures are expected to remain “seasonably hot and humid,” with the heat index expected to get as high as 107 in the western Panhandle but mostly ranging between 96 and 104.

National Hurricane Center tracking Invest 90L in Atlantic

Satellite images indicate disorganized showers and thunderstorms are displaced to the east of an area of low pressure designated as Invest 90L.

The system is located about 600 miles east of Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center said at its 8 a.m. advisory.

Environmental conditions are still marginally favorable for further development, and an increase in thunderstorm activity could result in the formation of a short-lived tropical depression today.

By Tuesday, June 24, this system is expected to encounter less favorable environmental conditions, ending its opportunity for development.

The system is forecast to move northeast around 10 mph, remaining over the open central Atlantic.
