Keys for the Buccaneers defense against the Eagles offense in Week 4

Jalen Hurts is going to be a main focus for the Bucs defense on Sunday. So the question begs to be asked: Can they stop the run game when he is involved?

The foundation of Philadelphia’s offense is its physical run game, and that includes quarterback Jalen Hurts. Tampa Bay’s defense must maintain strong gap discipline and control the line of scrimmage to limit both running backs and Hurts on designed quarterback runs. Edge containment will be crucial because if Hurts gets outside, he can extend plays or pick up chunks of yards with his legs.

Linebackers like Lavonte David and SirVocea Dennis need to play fast but disciplined, staying home on read-options and not biting on fakes.

Disrupt Hurts and Win at the Line

The Eagles’ offense thrives on rhythm and timing, but it falls apart under consistent pressure. Tampa Bay must generate a pass rush, especially up the middle, to collapse the pocket and make Hurts uncomfortable. While blitzing can be risky against a mobile quarterback, well-timed pressure packages can force hurried throws or mistakes. The key is to mix looks and avoid predictability, using stunts, disguised blitzes, and shifting fronts to confuse Philly’s offensive line. Throwing in defensive back blitzes like they have the last two weeks, the Bucs can keep Hurts on his toes.

Tackle Cleanly and Limit Big Plays

The Eagles are loaded with yards-after-catch threats like A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Poor tackling can quickly turn a routine 5-yard pass into a 25-yard gain. The Buccaneers must be sharp with their fundamentals, wrap up, drive through contact, and gang tackle when necessary. Additionally, forcing Philadelphia into third-and-long situations and holding strong in the red zone will be crucial.

If the Bucs can make the Eagles settle for field goals instead of touchdowns, they’ll keep the game within reach, even being as shorthanded as they are.
