Herald-Tribune Girls Athlete of the Week for Sept. 8-13 winner Palmetto High golfer Skye Foos

Each week during the school year the Sarasota Herald-Tribune selects girls athletes that stood out the week before based on a combination of coach reports and school nominations sent to sports htincoming@gmail.com and our coverage. Those athletes are put in a poll sponsored by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, Inc. each Monday on heraldtribune.com and you, our readers, vote on who you think did it best. To get to know our winners better, the Herald-Tribune will have a question-and-answer session with each athlete weekly.

The Herald-Tribune Girls Athlete of the Week sponsored by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network for Sept. 8-13 winner was Palmetto High golfer Skye Foos, who won the poll by 57.63% of the vote. Foos shot a four-under par 26 to help Palmetto defeat Sarasota and Saint Stephen’s in a tri-match.

When and why did you start playing golf?

Foos: I started playing golf in August of 2020 because I wanted to take on a more individual sport and try something new. After a friend wrote me in to join the golf club at our elementary school in fifth grade, I quickly developed a love and passion for the sport.

What is your favorite all-time golf memory?

Foos: So far my all-time favorite memory in golf was during my sophomore year when I qualified for states as an individual, becoming the first female golfer in my high school’s history to achieve that.

What has been your favorite moment this season?

Foos: I would say my favorite moment is shooting my all-time low at my home course with a total score of four under par. I remember getting no bogies. It was all pars and four birdies, which was different for me.

What makes you most confident in this year’s team?

Foos: Our goal as a team is to have fun and play our personal best each time, and I’m confident we can do that because we don’t pressure ourselves too much and we always support each other.

What has been your most humbling moment in football?

Foos: To be honest, I feel every moment in golf for me is humbling. You could be standing over the ball on the first tee feeling the most confident you’ve ever been in your game and proceed to hit the ugliest shot in the history of shots that will make you question why you picked up a club in the first place, which has happened to me more times than I care to admit.

What is your goal in golf?

Foos: My goal is to obtain a college scholarship for golf, and hopefully make a career out of it, with my ultimate goal to play on the LPGA one day, God willing. I mostly want to be the best player I can be and see where that takes me. Since my first year of playing, I’ve wanted to take it seriously. I knew I always wanted to do something with sports because that’s all I really cared about growing up. With golf, I saw that opportunity.

Who is your favorite golfer and why?

Foos: It would either be Paul Runyan or Annika Sorenstam because of how they approach the game. The values they instill make them an inspiration to me. I try to emulate my golf game after them, prioritizing strategy and course management while also emphasizing character and letting your score speak for itself.
