Tyler Mawhinney and the Fleming Island Golden Eagles golf team have their work cut out for them in the second of the FHSAA Class 2A state boys tournament on Nov. 19 at the Mission Inn Resort El Campeon Course.
Fleming Island, looking to repeat as 2A state champions and win a state title for the third year in a row, is tied for second with Coral Springs Charter at 20-over 308, two shots behind leader Wellington Garcia.
Mawhinney, who won the district and region tournaments to lead the Eagles to the team titles, had three bogeys and two birdies and at 1-over 73, is tied for seventh, five shots behind Jack Mokris of Orlando Bishop Moore (68).
A lot can happen in the second round. Bishop Moore is only one shot behind Fleming Island Coral Springs Charter. Broward American Heritage is another five shots back and four teams, Wesley Chapel (27-over), Naples Barron Collier (28-over), Tallahassee Lincoln and Live Oak Suwannee (29-over) are within range.
Eleven of the 16 teams in the field are within 13 shots of Garcia.
Turner Hersey of Palatka, playing as an individual, is tied with Mawhinney at 1-over. Ryan Houck of Fleming Island (75) is tied for 11th and Will McGready (77) is tied for 17th.
Fleming’s Sophia Moody in contention in girls 2A
Fleming Island freshman Sophia Moody had four bogeys and three birdies and at 1-over 72 is among a five-way tie for second in the girls 2A individual standings at the Mission Inn Las Colinas Course.
Moody trails Lily Martin of Santa Rosa South Walton Beach by two shots.
Stanton is 12th in the team standings at 79-over 363. Senior Lily Chiang (74) is tied for 10th.
Broward American Heritage leads SLAM Academy by one shot at 20-over 304. No other team is closer than 11 shots.
