INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Vero Beach locksmith remains in critical condition and a deputy was released from a hospital two days after the Nov. 21 Bermuda Club eviction shooting that led to the death of veteran Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, 47.
Deputy Tino Arizpe, with 25 years at the agency, was shot in the shoulder as deputies were serving an eviction notice on Nov. 21.
He was released from HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital around noon Nov. 23, according to a social media post by the agency. He is now continuing his recovery at home surrounded by support, it said.
Vero Beach area locksmith David Long is still in critical condition at the Lawnwood hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The accused shooter, Michael Halberstam, 37, died Nov. 22 while receiving medical treatment for what officials said were multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the exchange.
Altogether, three deputies were at the 1137 Governors Way home on the barrier island of Orchid around 9 a.m. that morning and had entered an entrance way to the home, when Halberstam was said to have retrieved a weapon and began firing “indiscriminately,” said Sheriff Eric Flowers.
Arizpe sought shelter in the home’s garage and returned fire along with Sgt. Gary Farless who was uninjured, while Sweeting-Mashkow died inside the home, Flowers said.
Flowers said at a Nov. 21 news conference deputies went to the home seven times in the past month.
Court records show deputies around Nov. 7 first attempted to serve eviction notice paperwork at the home after the eviction process began by Halberstam’s mother around Nov. 5, who in court filings states her son began living at the residence in 2018.
Flowers said Halberstam was not “on our radar.” He said he had a 2015 assault charge and earlier drug-related charges all out of Virginia. Those charges were later dropped.
