Cooler weather coming to Tallahassee from 'backdoor' cold front

A backdoor cold front moving in from the northeast rather than the more typical west is forecast to bring more pleasant fall weather to North Florida for the next several days.

High temperatures are forecast to drop to the upper 70s and low 80s with lows dipping to the upper 50s and low 60s, according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee

“Main story … will be the approach of a backdoor cold front,” NWS Tallahassee said in an Oct. 9 forecast discussion. “This front, spurred on by surface high pressure nosing down the eastern seaboard, will bring a relief to above average temperatures that have been in place for the last week.”

The front began approaching the area on Oct. 9, according to the Weather Service, which is not taking media calls during the federal government shutdown.

“Cooler temperatures will continue to move in to the area from the northeast overnight and by Friday morning (Oct. 10) most locations will be in upper 50s and low 60s,” NWS said.

A cool northeasterly flow will continue into the early weekend, with an upper-level trough and a strengthening surface low “will help keep cooler and drier north and northeasterly flow in place,” the Weather Service said. While a few isolated showers are possible, conditions are expected to remain dry into next week.

“Temperatures will begin to warm by the end of the weekend and into early next week as a large upper level ridge develops across the Gulf Coast states,” NWS said.. “While no impactful weather is forecast next week, the ongoing drought and warming conditions could lead to elevated fire concerns next week.”

Since September, Tallahassee has gotten only about an inch of rain, which is roughly 5 inches below normal.
