69-year-old bicyclist killed in crash in East Naples

A 69-year-old Naples man died when he was struck by a driver while riding his bicycle in East Naples.

The accident happened at 11 a.m. Nov. 26 at U.S. 41 and Peters Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

An investigation is pending.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

There have been five bicycle-related fatalities in Collier this year as of Nov. 22; the 69-year-old would become the sixth victim, according to crash data from the highway patrol.

Here’s what happened:

A Naples man, also 69, was driving a pick up and heading south on Airport-Pulling Road approaching the intersection of U.S. 41.

The man on the bicycle was on the sidewalk on U.S. 41 in the area of the crosswalk and attempted to cross Peters Avenue.

He was hit by the front of the pick up. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the pick up, whose identity has not been released, was not injured. He was wearing his seatbelt.
