Who’s on the bubble? 5 Chargers players fighting for a roster spot in camp

The Chargers boast a talented roster heading into the 2025 season. While that is a good thing, it also means that the coaching staff will have to make some tough decisions when they construct their 53-man roster.

Several players from last season’s roster will be competing to make the cut when training camp begins this upcoming month.

RB Hassan Haskins

Last season, Haskins primarily served as the third running back behind J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. He wasn’t much of a factor out of the backfield, but he was a key special-teams contributor. While that is a valuable asset to have, Haskins will have to beat out a few backs vying for a spot, including undrafted rookie Raheim Sanders.

WR Jalen Reagor

Reagor started the season on the Chargers’ practice squad but was elevated to the active roster in Week 7. In eight games, he amassed seven receptions for 100 yards on 12 targets. Reagor also served as a special-teams player. After missing the final month of the season with a finger injury, he was re-signed in the offseason. The 26-year-old will have to compete with rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Brenden Rice for one of the final spots.

TE Tucker Fisk

After starting the season on the practice squad, Fisk was signed to the active roster in November. He played in nine regular-season games, with five starts. Fisk was primarily used as a blocker in multiple tight-end sets, ultimately finishing as the No. 2 TE when injuries occurred to other members in the position group. He also contributed on special teams. The Chargers drafted Oronde Gadsden II. Undrafted rookie Stevo Klotz will also be fighting for a spot.

DT Scott Matlock

Matlock wore a few hats last season, contributing on offense (fullback), defense (defensive tackle), and special teams. His two-way versatility is an appealing trait, but it doesn’t necessarily mean his job status is secure. Matlock will have to beat out Klotz for the fullback spot. Matlock will also have some competition for a spot on the backend of the defensive tackle room.

S Tony Jefferson

The Chargers could start the season off with five safeties, all because of Derwin James being at his best when playing in the Nickel role. But if they only roll with four, the veteran Jefferson will have competition with sixth-round pick R.J. Mickens. After coming out of retirement and signing with the Chargers last season, Jefferson provided safety depth and appeared in eight games (four starts) and finished with 27 tackles and a tackle for loss. He re-signed with the team this offseason.
