Three weeks into the men’s college basketball season and several highly touted teams fall including No. 7 UConn in USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll released on Monday.
UConn wasn’t the only team that fell down in the poll this season. Including the Huskies, seven teams dropped out of the poll, but only two lost their ranked status, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Kansas Jayhawks. The other four teams that fell were the No. 11 BYU Cougars, the No. 14 Illinois Fighting Illini, the No. 18 Kentucky Wildcats and the No. 20 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers and No. 2 Houston Cougars remain at the top, but the No. 3 Arizona Wildcats have joined them as they steadily rose throughout the ranks. Just behind them was the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils, the No. 5 Louisville Cardinals and the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines.
Six spots after the Wolverines would be the next Big Ten team, the No. 12 Michigan State Spartans, who rose up six spots. Two spaces after the Spartans would be the before mentioned No. 14 Illinois.
It wouldn’t be too much longer for the next Big Ten teams appearance as the No. 19 UCLA Bruins climbed up one spot, since their drastic fall from No. 12 at the beginning of the season.
The final Big Ten team was the No. 24 Indiana Hoosiers, who moved up from No. 25 after making their first appearance on the poll last week.
Six other Big Ten teams received votes starting with Wisconsin’s 51 votes, the Oregon Ducks’ 23 votes, the USC Trojans’ 11 votes, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ nine votes and the Ohio State Buckeyes’ and Iowa Hawkeyes having six votes each.
