'We see ya!': Search team finds fisherman missing on Iosco County lake

A fisherman lost after dark on a lake in Iosco County was rescued by a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation office and state troopers.

The 83-year-old was reported missing on Tawas Lake at around 9:45 p.m. Aug. 20, according to a social media post from Michigan State Police’s Third District.

The man’s wife said he had gone fishing in his boat at about 6 p.m. and had not returned. She said he did not have his cellphone, flashlight, or other emergency equipment, his boat was not equipped with lights, and he was not wearing his hearing aids, officials said.

The conservation officer and troopers began searching the lake, then in complete darkness, using a shallow water mud boat provided by an off-duty Oscoda Township police officer, officials said.

The search team heard a voice and saw a flame from a lighter and found the fisherman on the north side of the lake stuck in tall wild rice at about 11:40 p.m., officials said. The man was uninjured and safely brought to shore.
