Pittsburgh — Justin Verlander and Jack Flaherty were out early Monday at PNC Park, the two injured starters doing their rehab work, which they do every day, home or away.
Missing from the rehab group, though, was outfielder Kerry Carpenter. That he did not travel with the team sent up a red flag.
“He’s seeing a specialist about his foot,” manager AJ Hinch said.
Not good. Carpenter, who has been out since July 27 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, had seemingly been progressing well. The intensity and volume of both his physical therapy and baseball work had been increasing.
And now he’s been sent to a specialist for further evaluation, which indicates that he’s still symptomatic.
Hinch said he will know more Tuesday when the Tigers release the twice-weekly medical update.
Carpenter hasn’t played since July 26 and any kind of setback could push his return into September.
Tigers at Pirates
First pitch: 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, PNC Park, Pittsburgh
TV/radio: DSN/97.1, 107.9
SCOUTING REPORT
RHP Braxton Ashcraft (12-5, 3.88), Pirates: He is coming off an 85-pitch, complete-game win against the Marlines. He lost his no-hit bid when Owen Caissie homered to lead off the ninth. He typically has sharp control (2.2 walks per nine) mixing an elite curveball (opponent average .148 with a 39.6% whiff) and hard slider (91-92 mph) off 97-mph four-seamers and sinkers.
RHP Keider Montero (9-7, 3.22), Tigers: Take away the hiccup in San Francisco, and he’s pitched scoreless baseball this month, blanking the Athletics in Sacramento over six innings and, last time out, the Guardians over 6⅓ innings. This will his first start or appearance at PNC Park.
