Saints could be missing top defender vs. Lions in Week 1

The Detroit Lions could be catching a bit of a break in Week 1 when they host the New Orleans Saints from Ford Field on Sept. 13.

New Orleans defensive end Cameron Jordan might be sidelined during the season’s opening week. The Saints’ all time sacks leader missed his third day with a hamstring injury and hasn’t practiced since Aug. 6.

“Obviously he’ll continue to evaluate it. Obviously he’s going to miss a little bit of time and we’ll continue to take that every day and we’ll see where it takes us,” Saints head coach Kellen Moore said after New Orleans’ Tuesday practice.

Asked if Jordan could miss significant time, Moore admitted his absence could last into the season itself.

“Yeah, we’ll see. I mean, it could possibly get into the season, but you never know. So, you know these things, you’ve just got to have some patience with it, let it take its course, and we’ll collect more and more information as we go,” Moore said.

Jordan, 37, has missed just one NFL game due to injury across his NFL career. The 6-foot-4, 287-pound EDGE missed a Week 11 game during the 2022 season due to an orbital fracture but returned the following week. He also missed one game in 2021 due to COVID-19.

Jordan logged 10.5 sacks last season and forced a pair of fumbles. In his 15-season NFL career to date, Jordan has totaled 763 tackles, 132 sacks, 67 passes defended, 17 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries.
