Prosecutors: Parolee battered, strangled woman day after leaving prison

On his first full day of freedom after being paroled last week from prison following his conviction for assaulting a pregnant woman, Ricky Kahil McLaurin “battered and strangled” his “on-again, off-again” girlfriend, according to Oakland County prosecutors.

The Detroit resident was paroled May 27 after serving 15 months for assaulting a pregnant woman on July 20, 2024, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

The defendant’s one- to four-year sentence followed his Feb. 11, 2025 conviction on charges of felony assault and domestic violence/knowingly assaulting a pregnant individual.

McLaurin’s 2025 conviction marked the third time he was convicted of assaulting a pregnant woman. In March 2021, he assaulted a pregnant woman, and was sentenced the following year. He was still on probation when he committed the offense that landed him in prison most recently, corrections records show.

Last week, a day after walking out of prison, the 47-year-old allegedly assaulted another woman, prosecutors said Monday.

McLaurin was charged with assault with intent to murder, which is punishable by up to life in prison, and domestic violence, third offense.

He did not have an attorney listed as representing him in online court records Tuesday.

“On May 28, the defendant allegedly battered and strangled the victim, who was described as his on-again, off-again girlfriend, while threatening to kill her,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement. “The victim reportedly texted a family member for help, who then called the police. The defendant later turned himself in to the Southfield Police Department.

“This victim sought help, and that may have saved her life. Women suffering domestic abuse are not alone. Resources and support are available to help victims escape abusive relationships.”

According to Michigan State Police data, there were 67,414 reported domestic violence incidents in Michigan in 2024, the most recent year for which statistics are available.

That’s up from 61,564 in 2020, although 2024 incidents were down from the previous year’s 69,457, state police data shows.
