Michigan football surges in national polls but remains lower in CBS power rankings

After the USC game a few weeks ago, Michigan football was all but counted out, left for dead, a redux of the 8-5 campaign in 2024 appearing to be on its way. However, after manhandling Washington and MSU in consecutive weeks, the Wolverines are on the rise.

Yet, not everyone is on the same page as it pertains to the maize and blue.

Michigan is ranked No. 21 in both the US LBM Coaches Poll as well as the AP Top 25. Yet, in Brandon Marcello’s CBS power rankings, though they moved up two spots, the Wolverines are sitting at No. 23.

23. Michigan

The Wolverines knocked off Michigan State for a fourth straight time. Justice Haynes didn’t look hindered after being listed on the availability report as “questionable.” He rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns, recording an FBS-leading sixth 100-yard rushing game. Jordan Marshall also added 110 yards.

Does Michigan look like one of the best teams in college football? Not exactly, but that can also be said of some of the teams in the last three years of the Jim Harbaugh era. This team is still seeking a bit of a killer instinct, but that’s to be expected given all of the youth the maize and blue have — especially on the offensive side of the ball.

But what’s most important at the moment is that Michigan will likely be favored in the next three games — all imminently winnable if the Wolverines play up to expectations — with a chance to exceed expectations with a win over Ohio State in Week 14.
