DELHI TWP. — The team at Gravity Smokehouse & BBQ reached out over social media to express gratitude Friday, Aug. 21, days after a blaze ruined their Cedar Street establishment.
“Our entire team is safe, and that’s what matters most right now,” team members said on Facebook. “The last few days have been overwhelming, and devastated but the love, messages, and support from our community has meant more than we can ever express.
“Thank you for giving us the room to process, regroup, and figure out our next steps. We feel your support, and we appreciate every single one of you.”
The restaurant team promised to keep their supporters updated, but, “for now, just know we’re okay — and we’re thankful for our incredible community and the overwhelming support that’s already been sent our way.”
Fire broke out the night of Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Gravity Smokehouse & BBQ. Delhi Fire Department received a call about the fire from staff at a nearby Taco Bell at 11:41 p.m. on Aug. 19, Fire Chief Brian Ball said.
Gravity Smokehouse & BBQ, at 2440 Cedar St., had closed at 10 p.m. When firefighters arrived “heavy smoke” was coming from the restaurant, he said.
“After exhaustive investigative efforts of trying to locate the seat of the fire, we found it in the concealed space between the roof and the ceiling,” Ball said.
Firefighters spent about 15 minutes fighting the fire from inside the structure, “but then after a point in time, as a result of caution and safety, we pulled everybody out,” Ball said. “The fire had advanced to a defensive state and we set up three aerial ladder trucks for firefighting.”
Firefighters from Delhi, Lansing and Mason were on scene until after 2 a.m., Ball said. No one was injured, he said.
The restaurant’s roof collapsed and the building was deemed a total loss, Ball said.
Gravity Smokehouse ownership bought the Cedar Street property in 2021. It was previously home to Champions Sports Bar & Grill, which closed in February of that year.
