A wave of extremely frigid temperatures are expected to hit Michigan this weekend, and several local organizations are opening their doors as warming centers.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning that began Thursday night and continues until 11 a.m. Saturday. Windchill temperatures are expected to reach as low as 25 degrees below zero.
NWS advises using caution while outdoors; wearing appropriate clothing; keeping pets indoors as much as possible; making frequent checks on older family, friends and relatives; ensuring portable heaters are being used correctly and not using generators or grills inside.
Here’s a non-exhaustive list of local warming shelters. If you need transportation or additional resources, call 211.
