From Detroit to Grand Rapids, here are 5 zoos around Michigan to visit this summer

It’s nearing the end of summer but there is no better way to spend a summer day than exploring a zoo.

Michigan is home to 26 zoos, from traditional ones to children’s zoos to specialty animal parks and sanctuaries and wildlife conservancies and education centers, all worth checking out.

Here’s a look five of the most popular and well-known zoos in the state, starting with one closest to home:

Detroit Zoo

Located in Royal Oak in Oakland County, the Detroit Zoo is one of the most popular and expansive zoos in the Midwest. It’s known for its innovative, barrier-free habitats and commitment to animal welfare, conservation and sustainability.

Wild Summer Nights evening concerts at the zoo continue every Wednesday through Aug. 27. And the annual Run Wild, a family-friendly 5K and fun run, will be held Sunday, Sept. 7.

Binder Park

Located in Battle Creek, the Binder Park Zoo is one of the largest and most immersive zoos in Michigan, spanning 433 acres. It’s celebrating its 50th year this year.

The zoo, which has hosted more than 10 million visitors since it opened in 1975, is known for its Wild Africa exhibit, hands-on experiences and focus on conservation and education.

Corks & Kegs, an evening of craft beverage tastings, food and live entertainment, will be held Saturday, Sept. 6.

Potter Park Zoo

Potter Park Zoo is a 20-acre zoo located within Potter Park, a scenic, historic 80-acre public park in Lansing.

The zoo has more than 350 animals, and the park itself is a haven for local wildlife and birdwatching. The zoo is also adjacent to the Red Cedar River with its scenic views and fishing spots. Its woods and riverbanks attract a variety of native species.

There are paved and natural paths for walking, jogging or biking, and a playground near the zoo entrance.

Zoo Nights will be held from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 28. Adults can sample food and drinks from local breweries and wineries, and check out the animals after hours.

John Ball Zoo

Located in Grand Rapids, the John Ball Zoo is an interactive zoo that combines traditional animal exhibits with experiences and a focus on conservation education.

The zoo will host Locked Zoo: Cryptic Cats for adults on Aug. 15. It is billed as an “exhilarating, after hours event” that “transforms John Ball Zoo into a thrilling escape game room. Work against the clock as you and your team unravel nature-related mysteries, solve intricate puzzles, and explore the zoo like never before,” the zoo says.

Saginaw Children’s Zoo

The Saginaw Children’s Zoo is a charming and family-friendly zoo designed to engage children and families with animals, nature and hands-on experiences.

With more than 10 acres of parkland, the zoo features a hand-carved carousel and a fully accessible miniature train.

The date for the annual “Zoo Boo” event for 2025 hasn’t been scheduled. However, it is typically held at the end of October.
