Former Michigan State hockey defenseman Jeff Petry has had a long NHL career spanning over 15 seasons. That career will be continuing to a 16th year.
Petry has agreed to a one-year contract with the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. The contract is for the league minimum, $775,000, but will also include additional incentive bonuses.
The long standing career for Petry has majorly been with the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadians, but most recently, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the hometown Detroit Red Wings. Over the 15 seasons, Petry has played in 981 games, scoring 96 goals and 289 assists.
Petry is one of four different former Spartans that are looking to ink their next contract for the 2025-26 NHL season. Mason Appleton, Mackenzie MacEachern and Taro Hirose will all look to continue in free agency the same way Petry has.
