The Tulip City Walls Mural Festival is returning for the final time Aug. 20-22, bringing nine artists from around the world to Holland’s Eastcore Neighborhood.
The volunteer-run festival, founded by Lori Appeldoorn and Chris Garcia, has grown into a multi-day event since 2022. The initiative aims to celebrate and transform the neighborhood while connecting residents across cultural and economic lines.
“What’s been rewarding is seeing what neighbors can do when they come together,” Appeldoorn told The Sentinel.
“What’s been really interesting is seeing the structural change in the neighborhood, the economic change in the neighborhood and the social development change in the neighborhood.”
This year, the main festival area will be 169 E. 19th St. — with additional activities beyond, including an artist meet-and-greet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Haworth Hotel. There’s also a car show scheduled 5-8 p.m. Aug. 21.
On the final day, attendees can enjoy live performance art, children’s activities, field games, food vendors, a beverage tent and storytime with Herrick District Library.
According to Appeldoorn, business owners have reported increased traffic since the murals were created. Interested in seeing the existing artwork? They include:
