A man’s body was recovered from the Cloverland Electric Power Canal on Wednesday, July 29 following a multi-day search operation.
According to a joint press release from the Sault Ste. Marie police and fire departments, the search began when a person entered the canal from the Ashmun Street Bridge on July 24. The man was later found deceased in the canal near the Cloverland Electric power plant. Officials said they would not be releasing the man’s name or any further information out of respect for his family.
The search operation, using equipment and specialized personnel from local, state and federal agencies, included drones, a remotely operated underwater vehicle, an underwater camera system, canine teams and sonar.
Officials expressed their condolences to the man’s family, loved ones and others affected by the tragedy. They also extended their thanks to assisting agencies, including Cloverland Electric Cooperative, Kokosing Industrial, Chippewa County Central Dispatch, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Border Patrol, the Michigan State Police Marine Services Division, the Michigan State Police Canine Unit, the Michigan Department Natural Resources and all personnel who helped with the operation.
