Bed bugs found at Charlotte High School for second time

CHARLOTTE – Some students were sent home and other were removed from a classroom after a second instance of bed bugs was identified at Charlotte High School.

Bed bugs were identified in a classroom last week, according to district officials, and students were removed from the area. A professional pest control company was called to treat the area.

On Monday, Feb. 23, another classroom had a student report of bed bugs, and all affected students were sent home, according to a statement shared on the Charlotte Public Schools Facebook page.

“The source of bed bugs often cannot be determined, as bed bugs may be found in many places including hotels, planes, and movie theaters,” Charlotte Public Schools Superintendent Mandy Stewart wrote in the post. “Even though it is unlikely for bed bugs to infest a school, Charlotte Public Schools will continue to work to identify bed bugs, provide thorough inspections of the affected areas, and conduct pest management practices.”

People who are concerned about bed bugs in their homes can contact the local health department at barryeatonhealth.org.

Bed bugs are unlikely to carry diseases, but they do leave bites that can turn red and become itchy, similar to a mosquito bite. Clusters of bites are usually found in a line. Parents with medical concerns related to any potential bites are encouraged to call a doctor with questions.

The district is not sharing what areas may have been exposed to the bed bugs or which students may have come in contact with them “due to privacy constraints, and to protect everyone’s dignity,” Stewart wrote in the post.
