A tractor-trailer driver failed to stop in time Wednesday evening, July 29, and struck another truck in the rear, setting off a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 96 east of M-66, police said.
The Michigan State Police Lakeview Post said three people suffered minor injuries in the crash that closed the freeway’s eastbound lanes and caused traffic backups.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s “MIDrive” map, I-96 has lane closures in the area of the crash for construction work.
The crash after 6 p.m. Wednesday took place in the eastbound lane of I-96, near mile marker 68 east of M-66, the Michigan State Police Sixth District said on X, and involved three tractor-trailers and two other vehicles. Police said a truck traveling east failed to stop and struck another semitruck. The impact caused a chain reaction crash involving a total of five vehicles.
The occupants of a 2025 Ford Mustang sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, a 48-year-old man from Oxford, suffered a possible head injury, while the front-seat passenger, a 48-year-old woman from Oxford, sustained cuts to her head. Both were transported to Sparrow Lansing Hospital, where they were reported in stable condition.
The driver of one of the involved trucks, a 43-year-old man of Memphis, Tennessee, was not injured. His front-seat passenger sustained a minor shoulder injury. Both were transported to Sparrow Ionia Hospital for evaluation and were reported to be in stable condition.
