An initial investigation showed that traffic was stopped in the area when an eastbound semitrailer that a 34-year-old Texas man was driving rear-ended a passenger vehicle, “starting a chain reaction type crash with two more semi tractor trailers also being struck,” Lt. Dan Spitzley said in the release.

First responders declared the 48-year-old driver of the passenger vehicle, who was alone her the vehicle, dead at the scene. She was from the Portland area, Spitzley said.

A 65-year-old Georgia man driving a semitrailer was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a 34-year-old Detroit area man driving another semitrailer was not injured.

Police did not indicate whether the driver of the semi that struck the woman’s vehicle was injured.

An investigation continues.

The sheriff’s office said it was assisted by the Delta Township Fire Department, Michigan State Police, DeWitt Township police, Eaton County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton County Central Dispatch and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
