After more than 40 years spent serving the community the St. Clair County Health Department (SCCHD) is embarking on an exciting new chapter. The offices will be moving to a new location, one that will better meet the needs of the community today and for decades to come.
The department’s mission, to remain the trusted public health expert for our community and our environment, will continue when new offices open in downtown Port Huron at 220 Fort Street.
Blue Water Healthy Living caught up with St. Clair County Health Department Health Officer-Director Liz King, RN, BSN vie email to pose some questions about the department.
Blue Water Healthy Living: Can you share what services are offered through the St. Clair County Health Department today?
The St. Clair County Health Department offices will be moving to downtown Port Huron at 220 Fort Street.

are remaining the same, however, here is also a shortened statement. “The St. Clair County Health Department offers a variety of programs including WIC, Environmental Health, Emergency Preparedness, and Clinical Nursing Services, such as Immunizations, Family Planning/Sexual Health, Tuberculosis (TB) Control and more. We also offer offsite services at our Teen Health and School Based Clinic locations.
BWHL: Who’s eligible to receive these services?
King: St. Clair County residents. Some clinical nursing services serve specific age groups (i.e., WIC, MIHP, Lead Testing, Children’s Special Health Services and Teen Health and School Based locations). Call (810) 987-5300 for more information.
BWHL: Is there a cost to the users for visiting the health department for services?
King: Cost varies. For example, the Environmental Health Division has fees associated with food, sewage and well applications. Residents can call Environmental Health at (810) 987-5306 or visit our website for more information. Other clinical nursing programs accept Medicaid, other insurances, or have a sliding fee scale based on income. Residents are encouraged to ask when they call or visit.
BWHL: In 2025 what is the most important thing the health department does for the public?
King: The most important thing the health department does is protect and improve public health. We monitor community health, prevent disease, promote healthy behaviors, respond to emergencies, ensure access to care, and engage the public. This year, we’re especially excited to welcome the community to our new location.
BWHL: How many employees does the St. Clair County Health Department have today?
King: We have approximately 100 staff.
BWHL: Can you tell us a little about your new location – size, new services, hours?
King: The new location will be in downtown Port Huron, located at 220 Fort Street. The new building space will offer enhanced resources, improved accessibility, and a more efficient layout. All clients and customers will enter through one main entrance, be greeted by reception staff, with a large waiting area, and services all located on the first floor. New address. BWHL: What is the idea behind your theme, “We Are ALL Public Health?”
King: “We Are ALL Public Health” means everyone has a role in building a healthier community. Our daily actions matter, and achieving optimal health requires everyone’s participation. When one person’s health improves, we all benefit. This theme reflects our commitment to care, compassion, and quality for all.
BWHL: Do you know the date of the grand opening at this point or not yet?
King: We will be sending out a media release with the grand opening date as soon as we have that solidified. During our move process, some services will be temporarily paused, others offered remotely. We appreciate everyone’s patience during that transitional time.
