Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has expanded his already impressive repertoire with the new series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which premiered October 12 exclusively on Netflix. This latest project adapts Edgar Allan Poe’s classic 1839 narrative but injects a contemporary and chilling twist, weaving together multiple Poe stories into one cohesive, spine-tingling plot.
The series, a dramatic horror blend, centers around the character Roderick Usher, portrayed by Bruce Greenwood. Usher, a CEO of a dubious pharmaceutical firm, is forced to confront his murky history as his family members meet their ends in a series of gruesome and enigmatic incidents.
Carla Gugino, in conversation with Netflix, described the show as “batsh… crazy in the best possible way.” Gugino’s role in the series is that of Verna, a shape-shifting entity with a direct link to a renowned character from Poe’s works. “There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” Gugino explained. She hinted at her character’s significant and ominous role, remarking, “You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma.”
Teasers, including first-look photos and posters, suggest Verna is a character with depth and dangerous power. The series not only promises a thrilling narrative but also brings together a star-studded cast. Viewers can expect performances from Mary McDonnell, Willa Fitzgerald, Carl Lumbly, Mark Hamill, Henry Thomas, Crystal Balint, Kyliegh Curran, Samantha Sloyan, Matt Biedel, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Daniel Jun, T’Nia Miller, Paola Núñez, Sauriyan Sapkota, and Ruth Codd.
Devotees of Flanagan’s earlier works such as “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” and “Midnight Mass” will recognize a blend of familiar and fresh faces in this series. “The Fall of the House of Usher” not only aims to continue Flanagan’s legacy of delivering high-quality horror entertainment but also stands as a testament to his creative ability to reinterpret classic literature for the modern screen. With its compelling cast, intriguing plot, and supernatural elements, “The Fall of the House of Usher” is poised to be a must-watch for fans of the genre.
