A group of baby turkeys trapped in a New York storm drain had someone waiting for them above ground.
Their mother.
New York Department of Environmental Conservation police officers were on patrol Aug. 3 when they heard a radio call about turkey poults stuck in a storm drain in Coram in Suffolk County on Long Island, according to the DEC.
The officers responded and found the young turkeys trapped below ground and crying out while their mother roamed nearby with the rest of her brood.
The officers lifted the storm drain cover and one of the officers climbed inside.
He rounded up the trapped poults and brought them back above ground, where they were reunited with their mother.
The DEC released video of the reunion.
Wild turkeys typically hatch in late spring or early summer. Young turkeys, known as poults, remain with their mother after hatching as they learn to find food and avoid predators.
