CANTON ‒ A Curaleaf cannabis dispensary is under construction on the northwest corner of Claremont Avenue NW and Tuscarawas Street W, beside the original Pizza Oven.
The property at 3145 Tuscarawas St. W is owned by Bear Management, the operating company behind the local pizza chain. Pizza Oven co-owner Dave DiPietro said there wasn’t much he could share about the development.
“I’m just building a building for a tenant,” he said.
A notice of commencement for the private improvement project was filed with the Stark County Recorder’s Office in late July. Fred Olivieri Construction Co. is listed as the contractor.
Curaleaf, through a communications agency, declined to comment. There are six Curaleaf-branded dispensaries throughout Ohio, with the nearest in Cuyahoga Falls, according to the state map.
There are seven dispensaries serving adult-use and medical customers in Stark County — Klutch Cannabis, The Botanist, Ohio Cannabis Co., and Zen Leaf in Canton; Bloom and Story Cannabis in Massillon; and Consume Cannabis in Alliance.
A prior plan for an Ayr Wellness dispensary on the same block of Tuscarawas Street W in Canton was withdrawn, according to the state Division of Cannabis Control. RC Retail 3 LLC, which is affiliated with the Curaleaf brand, then proposed the new dispensary.
James Crawford, a spokesman for the division, said the state awarded the company a provisional license for the 3145 Tuscarawas St. W dispensary.
“It should be noted that a provisional license does not permit the entity to sell cannabis; it is simply a placeholder issued while the provisional licensee works to meet the requirements to obtain a certificate of operation from the DCC to open the business to customers,” he said by email.
Two other locations, 3100 Atlantic Blvd. NE in Canton and 1490 E. State St. in Alliance, have been proposed as dispensaries. The state has awarded CannaMed Therapeutics LLC a provisional license for the Canton location and has accepted the Alliance site for Parma Wellness LLC, which did not yet have a provisional license.
