Detroit Pistons will tip off 2026-27 NBA season against Boston Celtics

The Detroit Pistons will be part of the NBA opening day schedule to kick off the 2026-27 season.

As part of a triple-header to tip off the year, the Pistons will play host to the Boston Celtics at 3 p.m. on October 20, 2026. The game will be broadcast on NBC.

The Pistons (60-22) and Celtics (56-26) finished first and second, respectively, in the Eastern Conference this past season. Both had earlier-than-anticipated playoff exits, with Boston going down in stunning fashion in the first round to the Philadelphia 76ers, who rallied back from a 3-1 deficit. The Pistons overcame a 3-1 hole themselves in the first round against the Orlando Magic, only to fall in Game 7 of the next round to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Both teams will have new looks when they face off in October. The Pistons retooled their front court, swapping in John Collins for Tobias Harris, while Isaiah Stewart was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. They added some shooting in Isaiah Joe and some speed in the backcourt with first-round pick Ebuka Okorie.

The Celtics, meanwhile, shocked the basketball world by trading star Jaylen Brown to the rival 76ers for Paul George and draft picks.
