Jahmyr Gibbs is the NFL’s highest-paid running back.
After negotiations gained momentum to begin Thursday, Detroit’s star running back is now here to stay in the Motor City. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gibbs and the Lions reached agreement on a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension that could be worth up to $75.75 million, making him the league’s highest-paid back.
Gibbs’ deal includes $51.5 million in guaranteed money.
Those figures come in just above Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, who inked his own three-year, $66.75 million contract extension on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Robinson’s deal gives him $22.25 million per year, while Gibbs will earn $22.5 million annually.
Robinson’s guaranteed money was $51 million. Robinson’s deal could be worth up to $75 million.
Gibbs and Robinson’s deals were always considered to be connected throughout this offseason. Sure enough, just two days after Robinson got his extension, Lions general manager Brad Holmes finalized the deal to make Gibbs the NFL’s highest-paid back.
Gibbs has been electric to start his career in the Honolulu blue and silver.
Gibbs holds the NFL record for most touchdowns scored in a player’s first three seasons with 49. The 5-foot-9, 202-pound back has registered consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons and has run for 3,580 yards in his first three NFL seasons. Gibbs has added an additional 1,449 receiving yards.
