The DeLand Police Department Aug. 1 executed a search warrant at a home on Loughton Street in connection with the double homicide that was reported July 29, according to a department press release.
Police served the warrant at around 10:30 p.m. with assistance from the Volusia Sheriff’s SWAT team and the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, the release, which was sent at 1:08 a.m. Aug. 2, stated.
Neighbors were outside late Sunday morning, but declined to speak with a News-Journal reporter. They did note which house was raided, pointing to a modest tan home on the street’s 1500 block. The home is 3 miles from where the two bodies were found, according to Google Maps.
The two men, Dustin Rose, 19, and Samson Campbell, 18, were shot multiple times and found at 213 W. New York Ave., a property behind the Athens Theatre, DeLand Police Chief Jason D. Umberger said during a July 30 press conference.
According to the 911 call, one of the victims’ mothers found the bodies and made the call.
The two were childhood friends who grew up in the area. Rose attended The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina, and was a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard. Campbell had recently moved to Chicago, Umberger said.
The DeLand Police Department is leading the investigation and detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the department at 386-626-7400.
“This is an active investigation,” the release stated. “Additional information will be released as it becomes available.”
